I found it incredibly interesting subscribing to creative review and also following them on Twitter this year. Being told about them and also researching and looking at current work has really helped my overall outlook on design and graphic design in particular.
At the beginning of the term for quite a few months I had several doubts about whether I was doing the right thing by going to university and studying graphic design as I was worried I would be restricted to simply creating logos and completing quite ordinary work.
Reading creative review and looking online at blogs has really helped me change my mind as in industry it isn't about what subject you've studied its the skills you have to create: something, anything. The driven mentality to want to create and a need to interact with people is definitely something which has helped me progress through my first year of the course.
There were a few different pieces which came with the annual one of which I really loved which was the laser cut piece "do you expect me to talk". This is a skill which I haven't had chance to have a workshop for yet and I really want to have a try at creating some work with this technique when I have the opportunity.
The annual also contained a monograph of leeds print festival which I attended earlier in the year- it was great to see some of the work in the creative review as I saw it in person too. They showed the printing process and how letterpress designs are created which I found really impressive as I didn't know it took that much detail to create work. I think letterpress is definitely something which I want to try in the near future as I have begun a real interest in print since completing screen printing for context of practice.
The above images are from one of the main articles within creative review which show Annie Atkin's work for the current Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
As well as a current film which she is working on called Penny Dreadful.
It is incredibly inspiring to see graphic designers working on other projects such as films
which really does motivate me to want to work in the creative industry as I would personally
love to work on a range of different projects and collaborate with others.
I thought this article was really interesting as it spoke about how creativity is at this moment in time within Industry. The illustrations made the article incredible interesting and somewhat humorous and light hearted which was also portrayed in the writing of the article. It mainly spoke about how graphic design and advertising are considered the same or involved with one another and a large debate as to where graphic design stands now. This also mentioned the use of digital media now and I thought this quote was quite important: "the share button is incredibly powerful" as it portrays the idea that industry seems quite widely an online business now.
